Malaria case in Dubai

Dubai: Several cases of malaria have been reported in International City (IC) in Dubai, doctors said. Doctor treating 2-3 cases every week as mosquitoes thrive in dirty water bodies .

General practitioner Dr Fouziya Ayyub, who works in IC, said dozens of residents could be infected by mosquitoes thriving in dirty water bodies in the residential cluster. "The stagnant waters are mosquito-breeding grounds. People get bitten and fall sick. When I test them, it turns out to be malaria," said Dr Fouziya.

"As far as I know, there were zero malaria cases here. But now I see about two or three cases per week."
She added some cases appear to be "local transmissions" rather than "imported" ones.
The UAE was declared malaria-free by the World Health Organisation in 2007, but there have been incidents of people getting infected abroad and entering the country.
The Dubai Health Authority (DHA) told XPRESS: "Like any other capital cities where malaria transmission is eradicated, we do have cases of imported malaria in the country... People can get the infections and return to UAE. This is what we call imported malaria." It added: "All cases reported to DHA in 2011 are cases of imported malaria; all the cases are expatriates..."
However, Dr Fouziya said some patients had told her they had not travelled outside the UAE "for a long time". If her suspicions are true, this would be a case of local malaria transmission, she added.

Viagra in a Condom

A new condom that aims to enhance erections may also lift earnings and buyout prospects for unprofitable U.K. drugmaker Futura Medical Plc. (FUM)

Durex condoms made by partner Reckitt Benckiser Group Plc will contain a dose of Futura’s Zanifil gel inside the tip, boosting blood flow within the penis. The product results in firmer, larger and longer-lasting erections for men who may find wearing condoms challenging, according to Futura.

Premium pricing may help the condom generate global sales of 150 million pounds ($235 million) annually within five years, tempting Slough, England-based Reckitt Benckiser to keep all that revenue for itself, said Daniel Mahony, who manages $300 million at Polar Capital in London. Reckitt Benckiser, the maker of Lysol cleaners, doesn’t usually agree to sales-sharing accords, which makes it likely takeover talks are under way, said Lala Gregorek, an analyst at Edison Investment Research.

“It’s essentially Viagra in a condom,” said Mahony, who owns shares of Guildford, England-based Futura. “I wouldn’t be surprised if Reckitt tries to either buy the whole company or buy that royalty stream out at some point.”
Futura Chief Executive Officer James Barder declined to comment on any discussions with Reckitt Benckiser. While Futura isn’t for sale, he said, “ultimately, we’re looking to optimize and maximize our return at the appropriate time.”

Most Earth-like planet discovered

(Reuters) - The most Earth-like planet ever discovered is circling a star 600 light years away, a key finding in an ongoing quest to learn if life exists beyond Earth, scientists said on Monday.

A diagram comparing our own solar system to Kepler-22, a star system containing the first ''habitable zone'' planet discovered by NASA's Kepler mission, is seen in this undated handout picture released by NASA, December 5, 2011.

More than 4000 people participated in the 3rd BurJuman 'Pink Walkathon'.

Men, women and children of all ages and fitness levels wearing Safe and Sound T-shirts and caps, joined senior BurJuman officials and breast cancer survivors in the 3.6-kilometer walk, which began at 8.00 am at BurJuman.

This year's Walkathon was supported by Damas, Taktical, Saks 5th Avenue and Samsung.

"The people of Dubai came out in full force today to support Safe and Sound - a true testament to the generous spirit of this city," said Sabina Khandwani, head of PR and marketing, BurJuman. "The enthusiasm was heartening to see and bodes well for the future as we embark on our journey to make Safe and Sound a year-long public education initiative centered on early breast cancer detection, diagnosis and treatment."

This year's Pink Walkathon included a performance by the famed Dubai Drums, who provided encouragement to the participants and added to the general merriment during the walk.

United Nations University ranks the Philippines as the world's third riskiest country

MANILA, Philippines – A recent study carried out by the United Nations University ranks the Philippines as the world's third riskiest country, following Tonga and Vanuatu, Ma Antonia Yulo Loyzaga, executive director of the Manila Observatory said, adding that the ranking was based on country's coping capabilities.
"All of these natural hazards are making us the prime laboratory for the study of disasters all over the world," Loyzaga told the Inquirer during a lecture on how to survive disasters, at Ateneo University in Rockwell Commercial Center
  • In addition, a local paper said, some 50 million schoolchildren and 15 million coastal residents live in low-lying coastal areas; about 10 metres below sea-level and are exposed to earthquake hazards and rising sea levels, respectively; confirming Philippines one of the world's riskiest places,.
  • A Columbia University study in 2007 also says that the 50 million Filipino school children at risk during quakes topped the number in India and China. This estimate had been made after a powerful earthquake hit Szechuan, China in May 2008.
  • Furthermore, coastal areas are subsiding in the Philippines, putting residents of these areas and the entire country at risk in the event of tsunamis, Loyzaga quoted Columbia study's warning.
  • "This will give us an indication of where we must be most careful as far as protecting our students. Therefore the Department of Education in the Philippines must look at the places where schools are built, and find out if they are sitting on fault lines,” Loyzaga said..
Loyzaga also cited studies done by the Manila Observatory which showed the Philippines is "getting hotter and this has implications on the country's food security".
A one degree change in minimum temperature will lead to a 10 per cent decrease in rice yields, according to studies by the International Rice Research Institute, Loyzaga said.

Philippines DPWH officials Photoshop themselves into typhoon cleanup photo

Philippines Department of Public Works and Highways officials were left red-faced Thursday after it was discovered they had Photoshopped three officials into a typhoon cleanup photo.

Typhoon Nesat struck the Philippines on Tuesday, killing 31 people, displacing 60,000 families, and leaving a trail of destruction in its wake. The disaster’s cost is estimated at nearly $23 million.

In the cleanup photo, the three officials appeared to be assessing the damage of the typhoon, but one discerning blogger and civil engineer noticed that something didn’t seem quite right.

A careful look at the photo shows that the officials seem to be floating in mid-air, and that their images were likely dragged into the scene using Photoshop’s lasso tool.

The department has taken down the photos and issued an apology on its Facebook page:

We would like to apologize to Undersecretary Romeo Momo, Director Rey Tagudando and District Engineer Mikunug Macud for whatever inconvenience that may have caused them regarding the photo earlier posted. Rest assured that we shall exert more diligence and prudence in the execution of our mandate to inform the public of our plans, programs, projects and official activities.

Apple online store in the UAE launches

Apple Inc, the US-based technology giant, has launched an online store in the UAE as the company moves to ramp up sales in fast-growing emerging markets.

The online store prices iPad 2s from AED2,099 and iPhones from AED1,899, undercutting sale prices at local retailers such as Sharaf DG and Jumbo Electronics.

Alongside iPhones, iPads and MacBooks, the Apple store will offer customised services including free engraving on products. Users can also build customised Macs, choosing their own specifications for memory and drives.

UAE electronics retailers said earlier this month they had seen a surge in revenues on the back of strong sales of Apple’s iPad. Jacky’s Electronics said sales of the tablet had accounted for about 14 percent of all technology sales in the year-to-date, a figure expected to rise to over 15 percent by the year-end.

Huge crocodile captured in Philippines

MANILA, Philippines (AP) — What a croc!

Its mighty snout wrapped tightly with ropes, a one-ton, 20-foot saltwater crocodile was captured and put on display in a town in the southern Philippines — one of the biggest such reptiles to be caught in recent years.
But shed no crocodile tears for this colossal captive.
"Lolong," as it has been nicknamed, is about to become the star attraction of an ecotourism park — unless it is upstaged by an even larger reptile that may be still be on the loose.
image from yahoonews

Residents of Bunawan township celebrated when they captured the croc, with about 100 people pulling the feared beast from a creek by rope, then hoisting it by crane onto a truck. While the beast was safely tied up, they examined its teeth, claws and stubby legs with fascination.
Their party may have been premature, however.
After the 20-foot (6.1-meter) reptile was caught over the weekend, authorities said Tuesday an even bigger crocodile may still be lurking in creeks of the remote region in Agusan del Sur province.
The scaly skinned Lolong — which tips the scales at 2,370 pounds (1,075 kilograms) — is estimated to be at least 50 years old. Wildlife officials were trying to confirm whether it was the largest such catch in the world, said Theresa Mundita Lim of the government's Protected Areas and Wildlife Bureau.
